The town of Aghios Nikolaos with a population of 20,000 is the unassuming capital of the Lassithiou region. An ancient town itself, it does not boast the Venetian grandeur of the other regional capitals, but is graced with overlooking one of the most beautiful gulfs of the island, Mirambello (in Italian, 'beautiful gulf'). While in town, visit the Archaeological Museum and the Laographiko, Folk Museum, and enjoy a stroll around the fishing harbour. The region is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches both on the northern and the southern coast (Almiros, Eloundha, Makriyialos, Vai), the majestic Lassithiou plateau dotted with traditional windmills, overlooked by Mount Dikti, the Minoan city of Zakros, and the now famous Spinalonga, Venetian fortress and former leper colony, the setting of Victoria Hislop's Island. While in the region, you may also want to visit the Diktaean Cave, legendary birthplace of Zeus, and the Byzantine church of Panaghia Kyra (Virgin Lady).
